About this position

The Safety Investigator is responsible to the Director, Safety Program & Investigations for the day-to-day oversight and support of safety assessments and investigations through the Safety Management System. The incumbent shall be responsible for managing Flight Operations, Cabin Safety, Commercial Operations, Maintenance, and/or other assessments and investigations and will liaise with those departments on safety matters as required.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES:

Must be able to perform, but not be limited to, the following duties and responsibilities:

    1. Ensuring that all personnel have safety as their primary objective by adhering to the Canadian North safety policy and utilize the appropriate safety reporting processes in order to identify and document all known hazards and risks to the organization;
    2. Ensuring continual improvements through the periodic review of documented processes;
    3. Consulting with technical resources and/or subject matter experts as needed for safety investigative purposes;
    4. Providing follow up to any identified safety concerns reported to both the Safety Department and operational management as necessary;
    5. Analyzing and trending safety data to ensure the effectiveness of the safety Program;
    6. Providing regular updates on significant investigations to the Director, Safety Program & Investigations;
    7. Developing, issuing, and tracking all corrective actions recommended to operational management related to assigned safety investigations in accordance with established corporate procedures;
    8. Establishing communication with employees and management as necessary to facilitate open collaboration and discussion related to safety investigations and assessments;
    9. Participating in the safety awareness program, to include developing articles for the safety magazine, publication of safety bulletins and briefings, etc.;
    10. Conducting base visits to review safety concerns/issues/feedback on all safety issues raised by the employee group;
    11. Maintaining proactive communication with the employee group;
    12. Maintaining a close liaison with industry safety associations;
    13. Investigating and reporting on safety hazards, incidents, and accidents and making recommendations to prevent reoccurrence;
    14. Identifying safety deficiencies and making recommendations for corrective action;
    15. Reinforcing the core functions and guiding principles of the companys Safety Management System (SMS) to enhance operational safety and reliability;
    16. Participating in safety meetings;
    17. Participating in risk assessments as needed;
    18. Other duties as assigned; and
    18. Supporting the Companys SMS by:
    - Ensuring that accidents, incidents or hazards are reported appropriately and within a timely manner;
    - Conducting audits or assisting with audits;
    - Conducting risk assessments and root cause investigation;
    - Assisting with the development and monitoring of corrective action plans; and
    - Conducting workplace inspection as required by the Safety Department.

    SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

    Include, but not limited to, the following minimum skills and qualifications:

    - Previous airline operational experience is required;
    - Experience in Flight Operations, Cabin Safety, Commercial Operations, or Maintenance Operations preferred;
    - Experience in Safety Management Systems;
    - Experience in investigation techniques, root cause analysis and Corrective Action Plan Development;
    - Knowledge of AQD Database an asset;
    - Knowledge of Canadian Aviation Regulations, Canada Labour Code, OHS and AOHS regulations and company documents;
    - Familiarity with Canadian Norths corporate structure and policies;
    - Must possess superior interpersonal , organizational, and communication skills;
    - Must demonstrate excellent research, investigation and problem-solving abilities;
    - Must be adept in handling multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced, team-oriented; environment, while ensuring confidentiality;
    - Must be able to document and write accurate unbiased reports;
    - Accuracy and effective time management;
    - Ability to work independently and also collaborate in a team environment;
    - Proficient in standard office software (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Team, etc.);
    - Ability to communicate in Inuktut a definite asset;
    - Ability to obtain and retain an Airport Restricted Area Pass in accordance with the Airport Restricted Area Access Clearance Program regulated by
    Transport Canada.
