The ODDS’s Data Engineering Team is seeking a Data Engineer to lead the development of data products and infrastructure that support decision science solutions across Delta’s operations. In this role, you will work closely with data scientists and engineers to design and build batch and near real-time data pipelines, analytical data assets, and scalable systems that drive performance improvements and enhance operational decision-making across the airline.

This opportunity is ideal for a candidate with a strong engineering foundation and an analytical mindset. The ideal individual excels in stakeholder communication, demonstrates a passion for integrating data from diverse sources, and is skilled at transforming complex data into actionable insights while optimizing large-scale systems in a dynamic, high-impact environment.

Primary Functions:

  • Design and implement data engineering solutions by leveraging emerging technologies to efficiently locate, extract, and transform data from diverse sources for reporting, analysis, and statistical modeling—driving continuous business improvement.
  • Execute unit tests and validate outcomes to ensure the accuracy and integrity of data and applications through comprehensive data validation, in-depth analysis, and precise coding practices.
  • Apply Agile methodologies to effectively manage projects, utilizing Generative AI tools to craft high-quality user stories and features that align with business objectives and enhance team productivity.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with engineers, product managers, and data scientists to assess data requirements and communicate key insights through meaningful, visually compelling representations.
  • Promote a safety-conscious work environment that prioritizes employee well-being and operational safety.

What you need to succeed (minimum qualifications)

  • 2+ years of experience with SQL, ETL processes, data modeling, and proficiency in at least one programming language such as Python, C++, C, Scala, or a similar language.
  • 2+ years of professional experience in information technology, specializing in software development.
  • 2+ years of experience in roles primarily focused on working with data, including positions such as data analyst, data scientist, data engineer, or similar.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong project management, organizational, and prioritization capabilities.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across all levels within Operations Analysis & Performance, OCC, cross-functional teams, and external stakeholders.
  • Consistently prioritizes safety and security of self, others, and personal data.
  • Embraces diverse people, thinking, and styles.
  • Possesses a high school diploma, GED, or high school equivalency.
  • Is at least 18 years of age and has authorization to work in the United States.
What will give you a competitive edge (preferred qualifications)

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or in a related STEM field (masters degree preferred).
  • Hands-on experience with AWS technologies, including RDS, DynamoDB, S3, AWS Glue, Lambda, Step Functions, SageMaker, Bedrock, CDK, and IAM roles and permissions.
  • Proficient in consuming and integrating APIs to enable data exchange and enhance application functionality.
  • Familiarity with real-time data processing and streaming technologies (e.g., Apache Kafka, Kinesis).
  • Familiarity with relational and cloud-based database systems such as Amazon Redshift, Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, DB2, Aurora PostgreSQL, and Teradata.
  • Proficient in utilizing Generative AI tools and AI-powered coding assistants to boost development productivity and improve code quality.
  • Familiarity with modern development paradigms and platforms, including Azure, AWS, GCP, microservices architecture, RESTful web services, containers, and cloud-native technologies.
  • Practical experience with Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) methodologies in Agile development environments.
