Job Description:
DPP is seeking a Controls / Automation Engineer for a direct hire position in Wilmington, Massachusetts.
 
Role Overview
  • We have a Controls / Automation Engineer opportunity available in the Wilmington, MA area. This role supports controls and automation engineering project execution involving PLC programming, DCS configuration, HMI/SCADA development, control panel design, instrumentation specification, engineering documentation, system checkout, and commissioning support.
  • This position is well suited for a midlevel automation engineer (4–6 years of experience) with strong handson programming skills and the ability to read and interpret electrical drawings. Experience in Life Sciences manufacturing environments is strongly preferred, as this role may support pharmaceutical clients. 
Controls & Automation Engineering Responsibilities
  • The Controls / Automation Engineer conceptualizes, details, and implements control systems for industrial processes and machinery that meet client requirements. Responsibilities span system design through commissioning and require strong executionfocused engineering skills. 
Key responsibilities include:
  • Developing control system architectures and selecting appropriate hardware and software components
  • Programming controllers including PLCs, DCS, and RTUs using Ladder Logic, Sequential Function Chart, Structured Text, and related languages
  • Developing HMI/SCADA applications for process visualization and operator interaction
  • Supporting database development for system data collection, archiving, and visualization
  • Creating electrical schematics and supporting system documentation
  • Supporting system checkout, startup, and commissioning activities at client facilities
  • Knowledge of standard programming languages such as VBA, .NET, and SQL for HMI/SCADA system development is preferred. 
Networking & Systems Integration
  • For larger or more complex systems, the Controls / Automation Engineer may support the design and implementation of industrial networking solutions used to connect control system components and field instrumentation.
  • This may include:
    • Designing and implementing fiber, wired, and wireless networks
    • Applying industrial communication protocols such as Ethernet/IP, Profibus, and Modbus 
Project Contribution & Collaboration
  • Works independently or as part of a collaborative project team depending on project scope
  • Serves as a technical contributor on automation and controls projects
  • May act as a technical lead on smaller projects and support junior engineers and technicians
  • May support Project Management activities on smaller engagements as needed
 
Qualifications & Experience
Education:
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical / Controls Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Computer Science required
Experience:
  • 4–6 years of controls and automation engineering experience preferred (5+ years desirable)
Technical Experience:
  • Strong experience with PLC hardware and software platforms, particularly Rockwell Automation
  • Strong experience with HMI/SCADA platforms such as Rockwell Automation and Inductive Automation Ignition
  • Experience with DCS platforms, with Emerson DeltaV strongly preferred
  • Working knowledge of field instrumentation used in process control systems
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, including control panels and power distribution up to 480VAC
  • Proficiency with automation protocols such as HART, Foundation Fieldbus, traditional I/O, Profibus, Ethernet/IP, OPC, and Modbus TCP/IP
  • Familiarity with S88 batch concepts
Life Sciences & Validation (Strongly Preferred):
  • Familiarity with Life Sciences manufacturing environments
  • Exposure to regulatory requirements such as cGMP and 21 CFR Part 11
  • Familiarity with GAMP5 and system/software development life cycle and validation methodologies
Additional Skills:
  • Familiarity with SQL databases
  • Strong technical communication and client interaction skills 
Work Environment & Conditions
  • Officebased engineering work combined with onsite support at industrial facilities
  • Frequent computer use and interaction with engineering tools and control systems
  • Occasional physical activity during commissioning, including lifting, climbing, and equipment access
  • Work hours may occasionally include extended hours to support project milestones
  • Ability to travel up to 25
